What Should My Oil Pressure Gauge Read At Idle – Hi everyone, I bought a Durango (2001 5.9 100k) a few months ago. Changed all fluids including oil. The truck was set up for 10w-30, I ran 5w-30 mobil 1 for the first 3k miles and then switched to 10w-30 mobil 1. When I did my first oil change I noticed that I was burning the about 2 quarts, yikes. The previous knucklehead BSed me, so the truck may not have been properly maintained.
So what I want to know is the oil pressure drop below the bottom line when idling in normal traffic? My 4.7 will never drop. Here’s my turn while driving the line.

I have an old gauge. Mine usually reads between the low mark and 40. So you can be pretty good where it sits. Yes, they will lower the idle oil pressure a bit. My 5.9 always has a slight drop in idle pressure. As far as burning oil, yes, check the plenum. And don’t put very thin oil on it. I ran my 10w40 engine with 262xxx to prevent oil burn for 3000 miles. If I put 10w30, it will lubricate as well. I don’t know where it caught fire, but it never smoked since I had it.
On mine (same model and engine) it seems to be at idle, but when I’m driving it’s usually a bit more. If you see this level while driving, you know it’s time for an oil change (slow drip). 10w30 here.
I just added that I have a different oil pressure gauge and the factory gauge may not be very accurate.

But it’s 20W-50 so when it’s cold in the winter it weighs 20 when the truck starts 1.
