What Is It Like Living In South Detroit – Back in San Diego, tour frontman Steve Perry admits for the first time that he completely invented the geographical location of “South Detroit”.
The most downloaded MP3 in the world has been touching the hearts of Detroiters since its release in 1981.
What Is It Like Living In South Detroit
Every woman, including me, can be a “small town girl living in a lonely world.” But who was her friend under the streetlights – “just a city boy born and raised in south Detroit?” Was he from Wyandotte or Lincoln Park? Who noted, “And on further reflection, why would a group of Bay Area rockers with no ties to Detroit choose that as the linchpin of a ballad about hope and determination?” Apparently the author, Peter Hyman, didn’t live here – of course he would know that we eat songs of hope and perseverance for breakfast. The other errors of the journalist include calling Down River Township of 1981 a “primitive rural” setting and asserting that Eminem grew up in East Detroit. Eastpoint? NO. Just say east side.
(Update: I spoke with Peter Hyman, who is actually from Metro Detroit and now lives in the Big Apple. He’s updated his excellent post to reflect these changes.)
Perry says the song came to him during a sleepless night in Detroit during the band’s five-night run in support of their groundbreaking 1980 tour.
Perry’s midnight call inspired Detroit’s unwavering devotion to the song. It’s a certain tradition to listen to “Believin'” at sports games, on the radio, in bars, it’s different here than anywhere else. First, the second part of silence, when the piano part begins, during which the audience confirms:

Detroiters usually belt out the first verse — it’s like a Chicago-style hot dog at karaoke. Locals who are too good to listen to the tour keep singing this line. Drunk people sing the whole song loudly. Sports fans shout “South Detroit!” During Red Wing games. Emotions are involved.
Knowing that there is no South Detroit will undoubtedly do nothing to change the hazy sanctity that people have created around “Stop the Billions.” And so it should be. That may be geographically incorrect – but Perry’s formation, as Meg points out, is fair and continuous…
