A high school student died by suicide after family and friends said he was ostracized by his classmates on social media. He was 16 years old.

Channing Smith was an 11th grade student at Coffee County High School in Manchester, Tennessee. Brooke Green rode the bus with him to school.

“He was always trying to help others,” Green told parents in an email. “Channing put others before his own needs. Time and time again.”
“He was a very sweet boy,” said Faith Honea, a classmate and friend of Channing’s since the 9th grade. “He always tried to make people laugh and he always succeeded. Even with the teachers, he brought a drink and chocolate to one teacher and tried to make the day her. She really loved music. She was a great singer. She was just beautiful.”
Channing’s body was discovered by her father at their home early Monday morning, the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.
“At first I was angry because I thought my father had done something to make him do this,” said Joshua Smith, Channing’s older brother. “I couldn’t help thinking that, but after crying with my father for a few hours, I realized that it wasn’t the only incident that happened at home.”

“Then I decided to just send messages to the kids who were his friends on social media,” Joshua explained. “Within a few hours I was able to prepare a story where my brother was texting with another boy. They were sexually explicit and the boy gave the pictures to the girl who posted them on social media.”
Faith says Channing, who was not LGBTQ at the time, was bullied online by classmates after screenshots were shared on social media.
“I wasn’t crazy like a lot of people,” Faith said. “I support him. I have no problem being or LGBTQ. I have no problem with them. They are very funny, sweet people. It breaks my heart that people found out and made fun of him for it.”
“The people who exposed him were completely unfair,” Green added. “They made fun of him, they hurt him and, most of all, they made him feel alone.”

“We want to give the children forgiveness in our hearts,” Joshua said. “We don’t believe that destroying the lives of these children is bringing our brother back, and it really doesn’t show mercy, but I think they should be held accountable to a certain extent… on a moderate level. We request the local authorities to take punitive measures and hold these children accountable.”

Faith and Brooke held a memorial service in Channing’s honor, where about 200 people came to remember him.

The dispute eventually led to an act of quiet defiance: Montero traveled to Philadelphia, where an obscure city law allows vaccination of children 11 and older without parental consent.

Not all states require parental consent for vaccinations. In Oregon, youth 15 and older can consent to their own medical care, including immunizations. Rhode Island and South Carolina allow 16-year-olds to vaccinate themselves against COVID-19. In Delaware, you only have to be 12 years old to get vaccinated against sexually transmitted diseases.
In California, this also applies to people over the age of 12 who want to be vaccinated against sexually transmitted diseases. But now California state lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow those children to receive all vaccines approved by the Food and Drug Administration, including those against COVID-19.

Montero said he believes most of his parents’ opinions about vaccines come from social media. “I try to explain to them that vaccines are safe. They are effective,” Montero said. “I am trying to explain that we know people who have been vaccinated, even members of their families who have been vaccinated for several months and have not suffered any side effects. But nothing seems to reach them.”

“I know young people all over the country are going through something like this right now,” Montero said.
