CAUTION: When using this product: Temporary burning, stinging, sneezing, or frequent runny nose may occur. The use of an inhaler by more than one person can spread the infection. Vicks VapoRubi has been used as a cough and cold remedy for many years. Although this product is relatively safe to use when applied to the skin according to package label directions, this product should not be consumed or applied to the eyes, ears, or skin. To reduce the risk of burns and serious tissue damage, Vicks VapoRub should not be heated in the microwave.
Vicks Personal Steam Inhaler
Vicks VapoRub is an ointment marketed primarily for temporary cough relief when applied to the chest or neck. Vicks VapoRub contains menthol and camphor, which cause a cooling sensation in the nose. It also contains eucalyptus oil which suppresses cough. When applied topically, the ingredients in Vicks VapoRub cause clear nostrils and smoother breathing, relieving nasal congestion and other signs and symptoms of nasal congestion.
In addition to relieving nasal congestion, the contents of Vicks VapoRub can also be used to treat other conditions. Menthol reduces skin sensitivity to pain, and Vicks VapoRub can be used as a topical analgesic (pain reliever) for muscle and joint pain. The main ingredient in Vicks VapoRub has antifungal properties and has been studied to treat toenail fungus, although the product has not been approved by the FDA to treat this condition.
Vicks VapoRub may cause redness and irritation when applied to the skin. In rare cases, allergic reactions, including hives or rash, may occur after applying Vicks VapoRub to the skin. Applying heated Vicks VapoRub to the skin can cause thermal and chemical burns. To reduce the risk of burns, do not heat Vicks VapoRub, microwave it, add it to hot water, or use it near an open flame. Lightening of the skin is a rare complication that can occur when Vicks VapoRub is applied to the face.
When used as directed, Vicks VapoRub is safe to use during pregnancy. Studies of people who used camphor (the active ingredient in VapoRub) on their skin during pregnancy showed no signs of harm to the fetus. However, camphor can cause miscarriage if ingested. Therefore, pregnant women should wash their hands after using Vicks VapoRub to avoid accidental ingestion. To avoid accidental ingestion by a breast-fed infant, this product should not be applied to the breast during breast-feeding.

Although inhaling small amounts of Vicks VapoRub is unlikely to harm the lungs, excessive use of Vicks under the nose has been linked to a rare form of lung inflammation called lipoid pneumonia. Vicks VapoRub ointment base contains petroleum products (petroleum). If petroleum jelly is administered daily in or under the nose for months or years, petroleum jelly can pass through the nose and enter the lung tissue, causing lipoid pneumonia. It occurs more often in young children and the elderly, who do not have the ability to protect their airways from the harmful effects of petroleum jelly. Symptoms of lipoid pneumonia include cough, chest pain, fever and chills. These signs and symptoms often go away within a few months to a year after you stop using the product.
Vicks VapoRub is not safe to eat. If swallowed, Vicks VapoRub camphor can cause nausea, vomiting, seizures, and death. Young children are at higher risk of poisoning after consuming products containing camphor.
Although Vicks VapoRub is safe on the skin and when used for short periods of time, excessive use or consumption can cause serious poisoning. Use on the face and around the eyes may cause swelling of the eyelids, blisters and damage to the cornea (outer layer of the eyeball). At least two people suffered permanent eye damage after accidentally applying Vicks VapoRub to their eyes.
Vicks VapoRub is flammable and should not be heated. Two published cases describe serious eye injuries that occurred after people microwaved Vicks VapoRub. In one case, a person put the ointment in a glass container, added water and heated it in the microwave. In other cases, anhydrous ointment is heated. In both cases, the products exploded and both patients required surgery to repair the damage.

Case 1: A 3-year-old girl with epilepsy was admitted to the hospital with a seizure lasting 9 minutes. The girl’s mother performed a steaming chest massage on the child’s chest, forehead and back for 10 hours before the seizure. In addition, the mother added camphor tablets to the spray bottle and placed the spray bottle in a bowl of water under the baby’s crib. The mother also hung camphor tablets in nets from the posts of the child’s crib and spread them around the house as a deterrent. After stopping the camphor, the child had no more seizures.
Case 2: A 4-year-old girl ingested up to 2 ounces of Vicks VapoRub. He vomited 5 hours later and had seizures 9 hours after ingestion.
