After his first photo shoot, Spot escaped from a makeshift tank by pressing on a weighted screen – snails can be incredibly strong. He was free in the shack for several days and then suddenly (what a stroke) he turned into our big pen. Since it had a solid glass top, the only way he could get in was to dig under the wall and break into the prison! Their eyes are at the top of their legs and, amazingly, they use the sense of range with their eyes to help them navigate. Although human eyes are usually 24 mm in diameter, snail eyes are no more than 1-2 mm in diameter. So, if you’ve also wondered how snails look, think no more, because you’re in the right place!
There are many types of snails and their appearance varies from one to another. Land snails, which are the type you’re most likely to see in your garden, have two pairs of stalks – sometimes called tentacles – on top of their heads. The snails have an eye at the top of each upper stem, which allows them to see any nearby obstacles or predators. While we humans have to turn our heads to see around us, land snails can actually turn their stalks without moving their bodies, giving them a large field of view. The smaller stalks are used to feel around the snail, giving it a means of detecting obstacles without even needing its sight.
Having a wide field of vision is especially important for snails, whose quality of vision is actually very low. Humans and a variety of other animals have the ciliary muscle in the eye. This muscle allows your lens to focus on objects at different distances, meaning your eyes can adjust to better see near and far away objects. The fact that the eyes of snails do not have this muscle means that much of what they see is out of focus and blurry, and they have to manually direct their eyes with the stem. In addition to this, snails do not have color vision, so their vision is black and white, and even blurry.

Although their real eyes may not be particularly useful for seeing with them, snails actually have light-sinking cells that cover their entire body. This means that even without eyes they can feel when a shadow casts them. It usually means a predator is nearby, so this reflex allows the snails to retreat into their protective shells to hide from danger. They can also retract their eyes while hiding in their shells, and then stick out their stalks to assess danger while still hiding in their shells. Snails have an excellent sense of smell to compensate for their poor eyesight. Different breeds of snails have different diets and it is interesting that carnivorous snails have much better eyesight than their omnivorous counterparts, to more accurately track and catch their moving prey!
