Best Cell Phone Provider Coverage – Chicago is one of Verizon’s demo cities for its 5G network, and we’re seeing some of Verizon’s best 5G performance here. Fortunately, Verizon’s 4G performance is important here, too, because while we got speeds of up to 1.7 Gbps on Verizon’s 5G network, we found it available in just 9 percent of our test locations in the city. That said, this is one of the few places where I think it’s really worth buying a Verizon 5G phone. Verizon has significant 5G coverage in many of the neighborhoods Chicagoans love — Downtown, River North and the West Loop. If you go to this neighborhood and experience a lot of congestion, Verizon 5G will give you better performance.
T-Mobile has the fastest 4G-only download speeds and excellent 5G availability throughout Chicago, but I’m pretty sure we’ve had issues you should know about with T-Mobile’s 5G phones. In the congested Chicago area, T-Mobile uses a system called LAA, which combines Wi-Fi airwaves with 4G for better speeds. The Samsung Galaxy S20 5G phone cannot combine LAA with 5G; it seems that on sites with both LAA and 5G, like the one we use on the south side, we get significantly faster results on 4G phones than on 5G phones. The service provider says it will be fixed at some point.

Each carrier in Chicago achieved excellent results, but each of the three carriers showed the best speed in different neighborhoods. Verizon 5G is in the Loop, the north side neighborhood up to Lincoln Park, and westward in the Wicker Park and West Town areas, and it’s super fast. (In other words, the upscale part of Chicago.) T-Mobile showed particularly fast results in more isolated areas — Edgebrook and Ravenswood on the Northwest Side, Hyde Park and parts of the South Side.

AT&T’s 5G in Chicago is ubiquitous but largely useless. Our tests indicated that 5G on AT&T was significantly slower than our 4G tests. AT&T customers should be happy with their 4G phones instead of buying 5G phones in Chicago.
In our 11th year of testing, we examine 4G and 5G networks to show you how well each carrier performs in 26 locations. Our results combine download, upload, latency and reliability for a comprehensive view of network performance.

Everyone is implementing their own 5G technology in different regions at their own pace, so the race is far from over. However, currently 5G coverage is not comparable to 4G LTE. It is mostly confined to large cities and densely populated areas, while rural communities are clean. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the best rural carriers in America.
While Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile compete for the best 5G network in the US, millions of Americans still want more reliable 4G. So, if you’re one of the many Americans who live in rural areas outside the nation’s major cities, here are the top three airlines.
Great as long as you have fast data, but what if you want to stay connected? In a survey conducted throughout 2019, OpenSignal divided rural America into three categories: marginal, remote, and remote—and if you belong to any of these groups, connectivity may be your top priority.

If you just look at 4G availability, Verizon has the upper hand. On average, customers in remote areas spend no less than 83.5% of the time on 4G coverage, while customers in marginal areas spend more than 95% of their time connected to 4G.
T-Mobile won the silver medal, with rural customers spending 77.4% to 92.3% of their time on 4G. AT&T came in third, with average connection times ranging from 75.5% to 88.8%. When OpenSignal did its research, Sprint was behind, even though it’s now part of the T-Mobile umbrella.
Many rural areas of the US are still years away from seeing 5G connectivity, OpenSignal said. However, WhistleOut has closely monitored the growth of 5G over the past year. T-Mobile offers the best 5G network, covering about 41% of the US. Verizon’s low-band network (nationwide) covers about 11 percent of the country, with AT&T’s low-band network slightly ahead at 18 percent.
All this means, the further you go into rural America, the more likely you are not to get low-band coverage, but if you want to try 5G, T-Mobile is your best bet. WhistleOut also offers a state-by-state breakdown of your best coverage options. The long table contains the best 4G and 3G coverage in each state and what is available in each state. Availability is king, but what if the network is so slow you want to pull your hair out? Has Verizon retained the crown, or is there room for other carriers to regain their position?
When it comes to download speed and latency, AT&T is the leader, but T-Mobile isn’t far behind. Although Verizon is third for download speed, it has the fastest upload speed, with T-Mobile coming in second. Last sprint again, although this is still irrelevant because the network no longer exists.
For obvious reasons, download speeds decrease as you move away from populated areas, but AT&T’s network is still the strongest, averaging between 14.6 Mbps to 20.2 Mbps. T-Mobile from 13.6 Mbps to 20 Mbps, Verizon from 12.3 Mbps to 19.5 Mbps and Sprint from 9.5 Mbps to 15.1 Mbps.

While upload speed is important, it is not as important as download speed. With faster download speeds on the AT&T network, users will have a better everyday experience. If you need faster upload speeds than download speeds, Verizon is your best bet.
The best rural carrier is the one that best meets your needs. No carrier is perfect, but some carriers are worse than others. You should always do your research before making a decision. We’ll break down the pros and cons of each of the Big Three, and offer some alternatives if you’re looking to save money while using them.
If your main concern is most 4G LTE coverage in the US, then Verizon is your best bet. Even remote customers spend more than 80% of their time connecting to 4G service, which should be a relief no matter where you live.
Of course, Verizon is the most expensive option of the Big Three, so you’ll need to be prepared to shell out for premium service. For the extra money, you also get a subscription to Apple Music, up to a year of Discovery Plus, and bundles of Disney Plus, ESPN Plus and Hulu. Players can also enjoy Google Play Pass or Apple Arcade for up to 12 months. Unfortunately, you’re looking at a rural carrier, and Verizon’s mmWave 5G access is limited to select major cities, though the new nationwide network makes it easier for many to connect.

Verizon may have an edge over AT&T on 4G LTE connectivity, but AT&T’s download service is faster. If you know that AT&T has comprehensive service in your area and you want to connect it with good speed, this may be your best bet.
AT&T is also in the middle when it comes to terms
